RIGHTS AND DUTIES SYNOPSIS

I don’t know about this article, Richard (Why Do So Many People Think Trump Is Good?, David Brooks, The Atlantic, July 8, 2025).  It seems more convoluted than it has to be.

I think that (philosophically) a life of rights claimed (by the individual) and duties owed (to Society)… can be much more, simply stated (in the generic).

  • We are all born with God-given free will— Politically stated as the “self evident truth” that All are born politically equal.
  • We, therefore, all have the right to self determination— Politically stated as the pursuit of our own “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

We, therefore, can live our lives on our own terms… subject only to the “limiting rules” of…

  • My fist (socially) ends where your nose begins and vice-a-versa.
  • My obligation to Society/Humanity is to live the (non-denominational) Golden Rule and do unto others as I would want them to do unto me.

That is a practical and fully understandable way to measure the individual’s contribution to Society and Society’s contribution to the individual … No ???
